Bunkhouse a hit with walkers

Lochinver Mission’s bunkhouse is proving a big hit with walking groups (together with sub aqua and outdoor activity organisations), with a growing number of enquiries and bookings already received for 2012. A listing is also being entered under ‘Assynt walks’  at http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/ullapool/assynt.shtml.  The bunkhouse is also proving popular with wild campers avoiding our wilder weather (or maybe they want to be closer to the wonderful food!).

Notice of Public Meeting & Community Consultation

It is now over two years since the Assynt Community Council called for a public meeting (held on 15th July 2009) to discuss the future of the RNMDSF Fishermen’s Mission, which had closed the previous year. That meeting overwhelmingly called for volunteers to form a Steering Group under the auspices of the Assynt Community Association to attempt to raise funds to purchase and re-open the building on behalf of and in consultation with the community.

A Busy Day for the Mission Staff

Lochinver Mission was officially opened on Wednesday 10th August 2011. Many thanks to Jess, Peter and the staff for making it such a great day. Here they are during their preparations. Unfortunately the weather conditions meant that our “blimp” behaved more like a dive bomber than a static balloon!

Official Opening – Funders’ Reception

A big thank you was given to all our funders and supporters prior to the opening. We received many glowing reports and appreciation for a great day and wonderful food!

Official Opening of Lochinver Mission

A packed Lochinver Mission was officially opened by Cllr George Farlow at  2pm. Celebrations were accompanied by refreshments prior to the commencement of the afternoon’s fun events.

Official Opening – Fun Day

Food and drink were provided during the afternoon’s range of events,  which took place in the afternoon and included Pot Throwing with Fergus, Face Painting, a Puppet Show and a Children’s Fancy Dress Competion. Unfortunately the rainy weather prevented use of the Bouncy Castle

Official Opening Day Celebration – Cart Race

7pm saw the Cart Race along Main Street, including “Lochinver’s Catch of the Day”

Official Opening Day Celebration – Raft Race

8pm saw the Raft Race along the shore with the winners collecting the £100 first prize. Most entertaining award went to the ladies’ team whose efforts to climb on board ended in failure and hilarity!

Official Opening Day Celebration – Ceilidh

The day ended with a free ceilidh in the village hall, with music provided by Kenny John, Helen & Keith and followed by Tina’s disco. Funds were raised for the famine in East Africa. A great evening.

Assynt Highland Games

Our Highland Games took place on Friday 12th August on Culag Park which adjoins Lochinver Mission. Both were bought on behalf of the community by Assynt Community Association in 2010.

A big thank you to Highland Stoneware

Our reception area now looks so classy due to the fantastic generosity of Highland Stoneware, manufacturers of  hand made and individually painted pottery based here in Lochinver. David and Nora Grant have been enthusiastic supporters of our project from the very beginning and we give them our heartfelt thanks for this contribution. Many thanks also to Tracey for carrying out this wonderful piece of work. See more at www.highlandstoneware.com
